I was saddened to read in the paper of the imminent closing of the Lumiere Theater in San Francisco.
If you’ve ever seen the movie “Good-bye Dragon Inn” by Ts’ai Ming-liang then you know how special movie theaters can be.
The Lumiere showed such wonderful independent films and it was a pleasure to be able to see them on a large screen rather than at home on a DVD on TV.
SF Chronicle article on the Lumiere
Serbis, Bugis Street, Cyclo, The Housemaid, The Imposter… I have seen movies from around the world at the Lumiere.
For one last time, I went to the Lumiere this week to watch the disturbing documentary GIRL MODEL about the exploitation of a 13-year old Siberian girl who dreams of making it big as a model in Japan. The films at the Lumiere have illuminated my life and I am sad to see this San Francisco institution close.
Good-bye, lovely Lumiere.
